Joaquin Phoenix won a Golden Globe award for his role in Joker. The vegan actor won the award for best performance in a motion picture. His acceptance speech has become a hot topic as he dropped several F-bombs and called out his fellow actors on climate change. He said, “We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs… And I’ll try to do better, and I hope you will too.”
Joaquin started the speech by praising the Hollywood Foreign Press who apparently only served vegan food for environmental reasons. “First I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It was a very bold move, making tonight plant-based, and it really sends a powerful message,” he said in his acceptance speech.
Joaquin Phoenix has ben vegan since age 3 and is an active advocate of animal rights. He ended last year winning the vegan of the year award and PETA’s 2019 Person of the year. This was Phoenix’s second Golden Globe win after he received an award in 2006 for his depiction of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.
One of his F-Bombs occurred as he referred to the situation with the bush fires in Australia which have been raging for weeks. He Said “Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat. The boat is already f*cking rocked. It’s really nice that so many people have come up and sent their well wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that”
The speech was not all about the climate and veganism. He took the time tell his fellow nominees that he was inspired by them and honoured to be mentioned with them. Joaquin also thanked the director of the Joker film Todd Philips, as well as his partner Rooney Mara, whom he told he loved.
