The UK’s leading bakery Greggs has just released a video on their official Instagram account hinting at an expansion of their vegan food range starting in January. The video is a short teaser and is captioned ‘This isn’t flake news’. Greggs video teaser does not give any clues as to what type of vegan offerings will be landing in January. However, back in August 2019 the bakery chain revealed that it was working on vegan versions of its best-sellers. Greggs non-vegan best-sellers include steak bakes and sausage, bean and cheese melts.
After the staggering success last January of the Greggs vegan sausage roll, it should come as no surprise that they are launching more vegan products in January 2020. Greggs attributed a rise in sales of 15% to the launch of the vegan sausage roll. The product was sold out in many places for several weeks as they grossly underestimated the demand for such a product. The Greggs vegan sausage roll was an eye-opener for many companies and a catalyst in the expansion of vegan options across supermarkets and bakeries alike.
It’s likely that these new options landing in January will not be last from Greggs. As veganism continues to boom and there is profit to be made the vegan options will become more and more numerous. Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside announced recently that he had switched to a vegan diet after watching the popular documentary The Game Changers on Netflix.
